Product Details

This provincial Indian reverse glass portrait of Queen Charlotte dates to the 18th century. This painting would have been painted for patriotic British residents of The Deccan or Gujarat areas seeking British products in an exotic land. During the 18th and 19th century, traveling Chinese reverse glass painters were commissioned to create Chinese 'back paintings'. Payment would often be in the form of teas, spices and silks.

This portrait is still in its original frame and has no cracks. There are some blemishes to the paint which can be seen in photographs. In overall excellent condition considering the age.

Provided with wall hangers.

Provenance:

Purchased from the UK art market. This exact painting sold for 1,500 CHF including premium (~£1,295) at Koller International Auctions in Switzerland, June 2016.
